What a school timetable actually has to survive
A school timetable looks like a grid and behaves like a knot. Pull one thread — a teacher who leaves, a lab that has to move, a section that gets added in July — and the whole week has to be re-tied. The reason it takes a coordinator two or three weeks in pencil is not the drawing; it is that every square has to satisfy several rules at once, and no two squares are independent.
- A teacher cannot be in two rooms at once — and in most Indian schools a single subject teacher covers four to eight sections, so their week is the real bottleneck, not the class’s.
- The week is often six days, and Saturday is its own animal — a half day for some grades, a full day for others, a holiday for the rest — and each of those needs different bell timings.
- Assembly, zero period, breaks and lunch are not periods — but they take up the same squares, and they do not always fall at the same time for primary and senior school.
- Labs and specialist rooms are shared — one science lab, one computer room, one ground — the timetable has to ration them, not just avoid teacher clashes.
- Some subjects need a continuous block — a practical, a project, a games period. A double that is split by the lunch bell is not a double.
- Teachers have a weekly load they cannot exceed — and a good timetable spreads that load, rather than giving one teacher six periods on Monday and one on Thursday.
Most timetable software still hands you an empty grid

The constraints WeekWise holds at the same time
Every one of these is a control you set before the week is generated, and every one of them is re-checked on every edit you make afterwards.
- Teacher workload — a weekly period cap per teacher that the engine never staffs past, plus a limit on how many periods in a row anyone teaches.
- Double periods, by policy — which subjects earn one, how often, from which grade upward, and whether they must land in the morning or never in the last period.
- Combined classes and option blocks — electives running as parallel groups, or two sections merged into one lesson with a single teacher and room.
- Rooms and labs — subjects that need a lab, a computer room, the music room or the ground, rationed across the school rather than double-booked.
- Breaks, lunch and Saturday — staggered lunches so the canteen is not overrun, guaranteed free periods, and a per-grade Saturday that can be off, half or full.

Board alignment is checked, not assumed
