An exam timetable is not a smaller version of a weekly timetable. It is dated rather than repeating, it has its own rule that overrides everything else — no class sits two papers in a day — and it needs a duty roster attached to it. The rules an exam schedule has to obey
- One subject per class per day — the rule everything else bends around. Two papers in a day is the complaint that reaches the principal first.
- Dates, not weekdays — an exam timetable is anchored to the calendar, so it has to know about holidays and the working days that survive them.
- A gap before the heavy papers — the sequence matters as much as the dates; students revise between papers, not before the first one.
- Invigilation is a separate problem — who supervises which hall is not the same question as which paper is on which day, and staffing it fairly means spreading duties across the whole staff rather than the same six people.
- The normal timetable still exists — exams end, and the regular week has to come back exactly as it was.
